Medical Insurance

Making Medical Eye Care Accessible and Convenient

At North Texas Eye Clinic, we accept a variety of medical insurance plans to help our patients receive the eye care they need.

Medical insurance may cover examinations, diagnostic testing, and treatment for eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye disease, macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye infections or injuries.

Some medical insurance plans also include routine vision benefits. However, coverage varies depending on your specific insurance policy.

Our team is happy to assist you with verifying your benefits and understanding your potential out-of-pocket costs before your visit.

Medical Insurance Plans We Accept

We participate in a variety of medical insurance networks, including select plans offered by:

  • Aetna
  • Baylor Scott & White Health Plan
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
  • Cigna Healthcare
  • Humana
  • Medicare
  • Medicare Supplemental Plans
  • Medicare Advantage Plans
  • Multiplans
  • TRICARE
  • UMR (Some plans)
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • UnitedHealthcare StudentResources (UNT)

Please note: Participation varies by insurance product, network, and individual plan. Being insured by one of the companies listed above does not necessarily mean your particular plan is in-network with our office.

We recommend contacting our team before scheduling so we can help verify your coverage.

What Does Medical Insurance Cover?

Medical insurance typically provides coverage for medically necessary eye care rather than routine vision correction.

Examples of services that may qualify for medical insurance benefits include:

  • Diabetic Eye Examinations: Evaluating and monitoring diabetes-related eye conditions.
  • Glaucoma Evaluations & Management: Diagnostic testing, monitoring, and treatment of glaucoma.
  • Dry Eye Evaluations: Diagnosis and medically necessary treatment of dry eye disease.
  • Macular Degeneration Management: Evaluating and monitoring changes affecting central vision.
  • Eye Infections & Injuries: Treatment of pink eye, corneal abrasions, foreign bodies, and other eye-related medical concerns.
  • Cataract Evaluations: Assessing cataracts and determining when surgical consultation may be appropriate.

Coverage for these services depends on your insurance benefits, medical necessity, and any applicable deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.

Does Medical Insurance Cover Routine Eye Exams?

Some medical insurance plans include routine vision benefits, but many do not.

A routine eye exam primarily evaluates your vision and determines whether you need glasses or contact lenses. A medical eye examination focuses on diagnosing, treating, or monitoring an eye-related medical condition.

For example, Original Medicare generally covers comprehensive and medically necessary eye care but does not cover refraction examinations for glasses or contact lens prescriptions. Certain Medicare Advantage plans may offer additional routine vision benefits.

We recommend contacting your insurance company to verify whether your specific plan includes routine vision coverage.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To help us process your insurance benefits efficiently, please:

  • Bring your current medical insurance card and photo identification.
  • Provide your insurance information when scheduling, if possible.
  • Arrive approximately 15 minutes early if you need to complete registration or insurance paperwork.
  • Obtain any required referrals or prior authorizations before your visit.

Providing your insurance information in advance allows our staff to review your eligibility and address potential coverage questions before your appointment.

What If My Insurance Is Not Listed?

If your insurance company is not listed above, please contact our office. We may still participate in your specific plan or be able to discuss alternative payment options.

Can I Use Out-of-Network Benefits?

Some insurance plans allow patients to receive care from out-of-network providers and request reimbursement.

If your plan offers out-of-network benefits, you may be required to pay for your services at the time of your visit and submit a claim to your insurance company.

Upon request, our office can provide an itemized receipt or superbill containing the information commonly needed to request reimbursement.

Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your insurance policy, the services received, and your plan’s out-of-network benefits.
